A Cleveland police officer has been indicted on multiple charges stemming from an alleged inappropriate sexual relationship she had with a 13-year-old boy.

According to court documents, 24-year-old Maria Velez was charged with three counts of sexual battery, two counts of attempted tampering with evidence and two counts of intimidation of a crime victim or witness.

Velez was arrested last month after allegations arose that she engaged in sexual conduct with a student at Clark Elementary School, where she was working as an instructional aide at the time.

The incidents, which occurred on multiple occasions, took place between March and December of 2015, according to court records.

Velez was not a police officer at the time.

She has been working for the Cleveland Police Department since Dec. 14, 2015 — most recently assigned to the Fifth District on basic patrol.

Velez is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 7.
