A Euclid woman's family is furious after learning the man who beat her to the brink of death and raped her in own home was no stranger to the criminal justice system.
Police believe Archie Leak, 52, broke into the woman’s apartment and brutally beat and sexually assaulted her over the course of five hours on March 29.
Leak was indicted on a slew of charges in connection with the incident, including six counts of rape, gross sexual imposition, aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, assault, two counts of kidnapping, petty theft and tampering with evidence.
As it turns out, Leak has a criminal history building up to this most recent injustice dating back almost 30 years. It all started in 1989 with an aggravated burglary charge.
In 2000 he was paroled, then in 2005 he pleaded guilty to burglary and theft charges, which got him six months in jail plus probation.
In 2006 he was convicted of receiving stolen property. Then in 2008, he pleaded guilty to aggravated theft. A year later, he pleaded guilty again to burglary and theft-related charges.
In 2013, he received a conviction for breaking and entering and criminal damaging.
In his most recent conviction in 2015, Leak pleaded guilty to burglary again and received an 18 month sentence.
His most recent victim's daughter said the system failed her mother.
"Obviously he's not learning anything. Why are you letting this man out? He needs to be locked away. If he was locked away, this would have never happened to my mother."
As frustrated and she is, the victim's daughter remains focused on her mother's recovery. Doctors originally said the victim had a 25 percent chance of regaining her vision after the attack. The woman underwent surgery on Tuesday and doctors said she will be able to see again.
The victim's daughter said she's grateful for the support her family has received since this horrific incident happened.
"It shows that there are still good people out in the world. There aren't just monsters out in the world like him."
