CLEVELAND — A memorial ride was held in honor of Sylvia Bingham, a Yale University graduate who had just moved to the Cleveland area three weeks prior to being struck while riding her bike downtown in 2009.

Bingham, 22, was riding her bike across East 21st Street down Prospect Avenue when she was hit by a truck. Police said Bingham was on her way to work when she was struck near Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center.

A native of California, Bingham moved to Cleveland to volunteer with Americorps Vista. She was donating a year of her life to help women climb out of poverty.

10 years after her death, Bingham’s parents are still fighting to promote safe streets for people riding bikes.

The Ride for Sylvia began at the corner of West 11th Street and Fairfield Avenue and made its way to where Bingham was struck and killed so those on the ride could gather for remembrance and place flowers to honor her.

Following the ride, Ohio City Bicycle Co-op provided a bike safety educational lesson.
