Newsburgh Heights Police Department is investigating after a woman was raped while walking home early Sunday morning.

The woman reported to police she was walking home around 1:50 a.m. from Fleet Avenue in Cleveland when she noticed a black male carrying a black bag following her.

She lost sight of the suspect but shortly after was confronted by him again near her home on Alpha Avenue where he then attacked and raped her.

The victim sustained non-life threatening but incapacitating injures and is being treated at MetroHealth Medical Center.

The alleged assailant is a black male, possibly in his 20s with tattoos on both arms.

The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction and is still at large.

The attack appears to be a random act of violence, authorities said. Police are urging the public to be diligent of their surroundings and to report any suspicious behavior to authorities.

Anyone who may have been in the area of the incident and saw a subject fitting this description is asked to call Newburgh Heights Police Department at 216-641-5545.
