CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Police Department said one person was killed Saturday in Cleveland in a car crash involving a pursuit with East Cleveland police.

It happened near East 110th Street and Lakeview Avenue just before 1 a.m.

According to Cleveland police, an East Cleveland police officer was chasing a vehicle that crashed into a tree. The vehicle then caught fire. One person died as a result of the incident.

Cleveland firefighters responded to the scene. According to the fire department, the crash happened after the driver apparently lost control.

East Cleveland officers were able to pull one person from the wreckage before the vehicle ignited, firefighters said.

The other occupant was unable to escape and subsequently died, according to the fire department.

According to the East Cleveland Police Department, "officers engaged" the vehicle around 12:35 a.m. at a gas station. They said the vehicle was suspected of being involved in drug-related activity.

ECPD says that after the driver was extricated from the car, he fought with officers. The person was asked multiple times if there was anyone else in the car, police said.

"Officers attempted to clear the vehicle to see if anyone else was inside, yet they were unable to do so because of the fire," ECPD said.

The driver was found to have two loaded guns with him, East Cleveland police said. He is currently being held on an aggravated vehicular homicide charge. Additional charges may be forthcoming.
