When meteoroids enter Earth's atmosphere or that of another planet like Mars, at a high speed and burn up, they're called meteors, according to NASA.
Also when this happens they are commonly referred to as shooting stars.
Scientists estimate about 48.5 tons of meteoritic material falls on Earth each day.
