Police investigating after inmate was beaten by cellmate, later dies from blunt force trauma to the head

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police are investigating after a Cuyahoga County Jail inmate died after an assault.

A police spokesperson said an inmate assaulted a fellow inmate.

Preliminary information indicated that a corrections officer was alerted by inmates yelling for help.

Shortly after, an inmate, later identified as Shone Trawick, 48, was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment for his injuries. He later died at the hospital Monday night.

Investigators said was beaten by his cellmate and died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Booking records show Trawick was in jail for misdemeanor assault.

Another inmate was taken into custody. No weapons were located.

His death is being investigated by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office and the Cleveland Division of Police Homicide Unit.
