The United States Coast Guard and local authorities said on Tuesday they were searching western Lake Erie near Turtle Island for a missing man who was expected back Monday night but never showed.

Officials said the man missing was identified as Brenton Burton, 35.

According to police, around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the watchstander at Coast Guard Station Toledo and the Monroe County, Michigan Sheriff's Office were notified that Burton was missing. It was reported that he left Monday morning from Halfway Marina on a trip to Turtle Island, Ohio, and he planned to return by sunset.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Toledo, on a 25-foot response boat, was launched as well as an air crew from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, on a Dolphin helicopter.

Watchstanders worked with the man's cell phone provider, officials said, in an attempt to locate him. It was reported that the phone was last used on Monday just after 11:30 p.m.

A 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, search crews found an overturned boat fitting the reported description near Turtle Island  as well as a gas can near Luna Pier.

Officials said more information will be released as it becomes available.
