CLEVELAND — Cleveland police are investigating a homicide.

Police said they received a call around 10 p.m. on Feb. 6 in the 1000 block of East 79th Street for a woman being assaulted.

Officials learned that a witness saw the 57-year-old woman being beaten on the ground and repeatedly hit in the face by 26-year-old Deointa Campbell.

A witness chased Campbell off and pursued him, according to police. The witness lost sight of Campbell and returned to the victim, where Campbell was beating her again, police said. Campbell fled on foot again.

Campbell was found and charged with felonious assault.

The woman died on Feb. 14 as a result of blunt force trauma.

Campbell's charge has been upgraded to murder.
