News 5 has confirmed that two people have died after a house fire Friday morning.

Firefighters pulled the pair from a burning home on Clague Road near Hilliard Boulevard.

Police identified the victims as 46-year-old Diana Rego and 56-year-old Christopher Nakel.

"I smelled smoke. I have an amputee husband, I thought, I better start checking the house," their next door neighbor, Marlene Wellliver, told News 5.

Wellliver said she ran toward the house but crews of firefighters beat her to it.

She told News 5 she noticed something odd.

"When I went towards the house I listened. I didn't hear any smoke detectors and I thought that was strange," she said.

Investigators will not say whether or not there were smoke detectors inside.

"I hope that they were just sleeping. And there was smoke. And they just kept sleeping," a friend of the couple, Chris Brown, told News 5.
