Madison Township police: 16-year-old accidentally shoots self with stolen gun

MADISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 16-year-old was taken to the hospital Friday night after accidentally shooting himself with a stolen gun, according to the Madison Township Police Department.

The incident happened around 10:05 p.m. on Chapel Road in Madison Township.

According to authorities, the 16-year-old shot himself in the upper left thigh. He was transported to Lake Hospital and police were called. The injury does not appear to life threatening.

Police said that the gun was taken from a home in Madison Township by another teen. At the time it was stolen, the gun was locked in a container that was later pried open.

The 16-year-old was sitting in a parked car when the gun went off. Police said they recovered the bullet at the scene.

“Theft charges are currently being filed against one of the involved juveniles. Other charges are expected as the investigation continues,” police said.
