The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office identified Genesis M. Quarles as the 6-week old female infant found dead at West 101st Street in Cleveland Tuesday morning.
Cleveland Police Department detectives and medical examiners went to a home on West 101st Street at about 4 a.m. Tuesday to investigate a suspicious death, according to officials.
Police said the child had trauma to her head and body. The girl's mother, 17-year-old Samantha Harper, also suffered trauma to her head and body.
The infant was pronounced dead at MetroHealth Medical Center after the ER staff attempted to revive her.
A suspect, identified as 21-year-old Maurice Quarles, was arrested by police. Officials learned Quarles had shaken and hit the 6-week old. When Harper tried to intervene, Quarles hit her as well.
Harper was treated at MetroHealth and released.
Police said homicide detectives were called out to the scene.
