A Meijer grocery store set to go up on the Geauga Lake property won't be built.
The popular grocery store chain said it had a contract to purchase property at the site, but the contract expired before Meijer began construction.
"Typically, we will sign a contract to purchase property, and that contract will give us a set amount of time (usually a year) to work through the due diligence issues such as site planning, local, state and municipal approvals, etc. In the case of this site, when the contract expired the site was not ready for construction," Meijer rep Frank Guglielmi said.
Meijer currently owns sites it can build on in Avon, Mentor, Stow, Lorain, Warren/Niles and Austintown. It also has sites in Brimfield and Boardman under contract. The first of the much-anticipated stores in the Cleveland area are scheduled to open next summer in Avon, Mentor and Stow.
