ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio — The Mifflin Township Fire Department rescued a dog that had fallen through ice Saturday afternoon, according to Ashland County Pictures.

The dog, named Leon, was being walked along a lake and took off, heading about 75 feet out onto the lake before falling through the ice.

Fire Chief JJ Bittinger and Lt. Amanda Bittinger responded to the scene, suiting up and heading out onto the ice to rescue Leon.

Amanda Bittinger fell through the ice and Leon tried to use her back as a step to get out of the water. She was then able to get the dog out of the water and back on the ice before getting out herself.

Leon was taken to the Claremont Veterinary Clinic with signs of stress and hypothermia but is now doing well and is back home with his owner.
