SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 27-year-old man has died following a crash on Austinburg Road in Ashtabula County on Saturday night, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at around 10:34 p.m. on Austinburg Road near Old Austinburg Road.

The OSHP said a preliminary investigation showed a BMW was traveling eastbound on Austinburg Road when it drove off the right side of the road, hitting a ditch before going airborne.

After the vehicle hit several trees, it came to a rest on the roadway.

The driver, a 41-year-old man from Ashtabula, was injured and was taken to University Hospitals in Geneva, where he was flown to a hospital in Erie, Pa. Troopers said he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

His passenger, identified as Xadial Rivera-Santiago, 27, of Ashtabula, died from his injuries at the scene. Troopers said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The OSHP said it does appear that alcohol and/or drugs were involved. Speed may have also been a factor in the crash.
