ASHTABULA, Ohio — A Geneva, Ohio man will spend the next seven years behind bars for killing another motorist in a head-on crash last year.
David W. Caudell was sentenced Friday morning in Ashtabula County Court of Common Pleas. His was also handed a lifetime suspension of his driver’s license, according to county prosecutors. His sentence was one year shy of the state maximum.
Caudell pleaded guilty April 3, 2019, to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.
The crash happened on May 3, 2018, on State Route 84 in Harpersfield Township.
According to authorities, Caudell was heading westbound on State Route 84, went left of center and hit another vehicle head-on. Samuel V. Hejduk, of Madison, Ohio, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Caudell was under the influence when the crash occurred, authorities said. Toxicology tests later came back positive for cocaine and cocaine metabolite.
