CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Cleveland Heights police are investigating a deadly shooting that also wounded another man.

The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. Tuesday at the basketball court at Denison Park.

Police said two men were shot.

Investigators said 25-year-old Jeremiah Moore of Cleveland died from a single gunshot wound to the torso.

The second man, whose name has not been released, is in the hospital recovering after he was shot in the shoulder.

According to police, two people were seen fleeing from the area.

Police believe the victims knew the shooters, but have not said what led up to the gunfire.

Vincent Johnson, a longtime teacher and coach in the community called the daytime attack "heartbreaking."

"This is a park I grew up playing in when I was a young kid, in middle school and high school," said Johnson. "To have something like this take place is just devastating to the community."

Retired teacher and coach Brian Burdine said the shooting alarmed him.

"Coming out of COVID, we just opened up, the basketball court's been closed for about a year and a half, and now they're open and then something like this takes place," said Burdine. "It's very upsetting."

Both men believe the shooting is another example of the violence that's plagued the Cleveland area for more than a year now.

"Let's stop the violence," said Johnson. "Put the guns down. Let's all start coming together, and working together to make Cleveland Heights a better place and bring Cleveland Heights back to what it was."

Cleveland Heights police said they have identified one of the shooters in the attack, but so far no charges have been filed.

Police said they increased patrols around the city's parks following the shooting.
