3-year-old girl with autism dies after drowning in icy pond, father rescued

OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio — A 3-year-old girl with autism has died after drowning in an icy pond in Olmsted Falls.

Olmsted Falls police said they were called to the 27000 block of Bagley Road around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday for a missing 3-year-old girl.

When they arrived, a witness said that the girl's father was struggling to get out of a hole in an icy pond on their property.

Police said the man told them he was trying to rescue his daughter, who fell into the pond.

An officer attempting to rescue the man also fell into the pond.

The officer was able to pull the man to the shore. The officer was uninjured.

Fire crews were able to pull the 3-year-old out of the water, where she was unresponsive.

She was transported to Southwest General Hospital, where she later died. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the girl as Carmen Haggard.
