Cleveland woman says teen shooting highlights crime problem

Soon after a teenage boy was shot in the chest Saturday afternoon on Itasca Avenue in Cleveland, a neighbor told newsnet5.com she was not surprised.

“There’s too much violence on our street, too many teenagers,” the woman said, “People we don’t even know, they just come to our street and party, 4:00, 5:00 in the morning every night, trash all up and down our street.”

A 15-year-old boy was transported to Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital shortly after 4:00 p.m. after a neighbor called 911 to report a shooting inside a house. The boy could be seen exiting the home, before collapsing on the sidewalk. Neighbors could be heard screaming.

The concerned neighbor, who chose not to share her name, said she’s lived on the street, which is adjacent to University Circle, for 25 years and has watched the neighborhood decay. She said she wants to sell her home, but with graffiti, blight and trash surrounding her, it’s a tough sell.

Adding to her frustration, the police district that covers her neighborhood is on 152nd Street near St. Clair Avenue, nearly four miles away.

“Who wants to live on our street? I mean my property value - I had my house built. I thought this street was coming up. We live a couple of streets from Case Western Reserve. It’s going down, down, down,” she said, "I just can’t take it anymore. It’s too much for me.”
