FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio — Fairview Park police officers are cracking down on children this summer in a fun initiative to raise awareness about helmet safety using positive reinforcement.

The Fairview Park Police Department teamed up with the American Automobile Association in their “Helmet Smart” program, which aims to promote helmet use when children are riding their bikes.

Dariview, an ice cream shop in Fairview Park, sponsored the initiative and added a sweet incentive to the program.

Children who are “caught” wearing their helmets are being ticketed, but in this case, it’s a good thing.

The citations are good for either a free ice cream cone or a free topping at Dariview. In addition to the treats, children can also enter to win a new bike from AAA.

Fairview Park police encourage parents to stop at the police station at 20777 Lorain Rd. to get more information on helmet safety.
