PARMA, Ohio — The Parma Fire Department put out a fire at a historic orphanage Sunday evening.

Fire crews responded to Parmadale, a former orphanage that opened its doors in 1925, in the 6700 block of State Road around 6:30 p.m., according to authorities.

Once on scene, crews observed heavy smoke coming from the basement and roof of the building. Firefighters entered the building and aggressively attacked the seat of the fire in the building's basement, authorities said.

Crews searched the building for possible victims but found it to be unoccupied. No injuries were reported, according to authorities.

Authorities said that the fire was quickly brought under control.

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
