UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — A mentor's role is to guide, give advice and support.

But a local man is switching it up, and doing something to honor his mentor.

Chris Wenzler is the longtime Sports Information Director at John Carroll University.

For the last two years, he's been battling against multiple myeloma, which is a cancer that forms in your white blood cells.

Fortunately for Wenzler, he isn't battling alone.

Wenzler is getting support from friends and family, including Mike Scanlan, who he hired nearly 15 years ago as an intern.

The two have remained friends ever since, and Scanlan even inducted Wenzler into the JCU Athletic's Hall of Fame.

Scanlan decided to start a GoFundMe for Wenzler and run a marathon to help raise money for his medical expenses.

"It's been an amazing amount of outreach from all corners...It's just nice to know that you're well thought of enough to help you out," Wenzler said.

At last check, Scanlan has raised more than $22,000 for Wenzler.
