BEACHWOOD, Ohio — A suburban Cleveland school district is getting three-point seat belts on its school buses after third-graders suggested the change to city leaders.

Beachwood City Council voted this past week to pass a measure allotting $250,000 to pay for seat belts on buses used by Beachwood City Schools.

The legislation was prompted by third graders at Hilltop Elementary School.

Students in a government class proposed the idea to a councilman during a school visit.

Their teacher says the ordinance’s passage showed students that they can make a difference. The educator called the project “life-changing” for her class.

The district buys new buses every one to two years. The entire fleet should be outfitted with safety belts within about 10 years.

There are no federal guidelines requiring seatbelts in school buses.
