CLEVELAND — A coalition of local groups is holding a rally at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center in downtown Cleveland to protest the treatment of jail inmates during the coronavirus pandemic and call for the release of more incarcerated people.

A procession of cars will go from East 55th Street and Hamilton Avenue to the Justice Center at 12:30 p.m., where a socially-distanced pedestrian protest will take place at 1 p.m.

Stop the Inhumanity at the Cuyahoga County Jail, a coalition of groups, organized the protest. They say the Cuyahoga County Jail has mismanaged the pandemic for incarcerated there: isolating those infected in solitary confinement without medical attention, having no measures to distance inmates, and not supplying personal protective equipment.

The groups are calling for Cuyahoga County judges to pledge to refrain from denying release motions with prejudice, fast-track judicial release hearings and grant any release motions as quickly as is allowed by law and compatible with public safety.
