OXFORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on the Ohio Turnpike in Erie County.

A 2016 Honda was traveling west on the Turnpike between state Route 4 and state Route 250 in Oxford Township when it struck the concrete median barrier, drove off the right side of the road and became disabled in a ditch, troopers said.

The 23-year-old driver of the Honda, Karysha Melendez, exited the vehicle and walked into the westbound lanes where she was struck by a 2015 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer, according to troopers.

Melendez sustained fatal injuries as a result of being struck, troopers said.

The driver of the truck was not injured during the crash, according to troopers.

As a result of the fatal crash, the westbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed for around an hour while crews cleared the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Milan Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
