A corrections officer and several inmates sustained minor injuries after an out of state inmate transport van crashed in on the Ohio Turnpike Tuesday morning.

The crash happened in Milan Township, located in Erie County near mile marker 118.5 at 6:45 a.m, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The van was heading eastbound on the turnpike, the release states. The driver, who was not injured, said he fell asleep and drove off the left side of the roadway and hit a concrete median wall.

The driver was cited for failure to maintain reasonable control of a vehicle, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The corrections officer and four inmates were taken to Fisher Titus Medical Center where they were treated and released for minor injuries.

The inmates are being held at the Huron County Sheriff's Department until they are transported.

The crash remains under investigation.
