Arrest video released of man charged in connection with the hit-and-run death of Mentor officer

Posted

More than a month after a Mentor officer died during a traffic stop, police have released the arrest video of the man involved in a deadly hit-and-run that killed Officer Mathew Mazany on State Route 2.

Brian Anthony, 24, was arrested in the Mentor Lagoons Marina after police received a call from a citizen who noticed a damaged Jeep parked in the marina.

Officers were able to determine that the Jeep found was the same one owned by the Kirtland resident they reached out to. The car owner told police his 24-year-old son was using the vehicle and had not come home the night before. He was contacted by his son and encouraged him to turn himself in to the police officers on scene at the marina, according to Mentor police.

In the arrest video, police surround Anthony as two officers used Mazany's cuffs on him when he turned himself in to police. Police said Anthony hid his Jeep under a tarp at the marina.

Anthony is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence, according to the bailiff.

Since the charges have been filed and following his arrest, the prosecutor said Anthony had heroin, fentanyl, codeine, ethanol and other derivatives of fentanyl in his urine.

Mazany, a 14-year veteran of the Mentor Police Department, was 41 years old and he leaves behind a son, father, and a brother.
