MENTOR, Ohio — The Mentor Fire Department posted a heartfelt salute to two citizens who helped save a man from a crash that occurred last week.

Last Thursday during the heavy rains that hit the area, a driver lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree head-on. The man became trapped in the vehicle and the engine of the vehicle then caught fire, authorities said.

John McGrath and his son Hunter live near where the crash occurred and heard it happen. The two ran over to the vehicle and carefully pulled the driver from the burning car, fire crews said.

John and Hunter McGrath stayed with this man until fire and medics arrived on the scene, according to authorities.

The man involved in the crash was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, firefighters said.

The fire department posted the heroic story on Facebook, thanking the McGraths for their efforts.

“The Mentor Fire Department is honored to serve a community that is made up of very caring people,” they said in the post.
