MENTOR, Ohio — Monday marks one year since Mentor police officer Mathew Mazany was struck and killed during a traffic stop and many will take today to remember the fallen officer.
Officer Mazany died on June 24, 2018 while assisting another officer on a traffic stop on State Route 2. He was standing outside of a police cruiser when he was struck by a Jeep Wrangler.
Mazany was a 14-year veteran of the Mentor Police Department
Brian Anthony, the man who struck and killed Mazany last year, was sentenced to a maximum sentence of 11.5 years in prison.
Anthony pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence, failing to proceed with due caution and/or failure to change lanes when approaching a stationary public safety vehicle displaying emergency lights and one count of failing to stop after a crash.

A memorial service was held at the Mentor Civic Amphitheater at 8600 Munson Rd. Monday evening.
