PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Dashcam video released by Painesville police shows two cars colliding while passing a parked patrol car that was part of a traffic stop, narrowly missing one officer and striking the patrol car where a second officer was inside.
On Saturday at around 2 a.m., two Painesville officers were conducting a traffic stop on West Walnut Avenue, near the Carroll Avenue intersection, when a passing vehicle struck an oncoming pickup truck before it struck the parked patrol car head-on.
The dashcam video shows one of the officers outside the parked vehicle on the passenger’s side while the second officer was inside the parked patrol car.
The officer in the patrol car was treated and released from TriPoint Medical Center for minor injuries. The officer outside conducting the traffic stop was uninjured.
Police said when passing emergency vehicles involved in a traffic stop, it is important to slow down and wait until it is clearly safe to pass. Always use caution when passing and give plenty of room for the pulled vehicle.
