Wednesday afternoon, Avon police responded to a home for a report of an assault and aggravated burglary. But instead of stealing jewelry or electronics, the thief got away with a different kind of valuable - man's best friend.
The suspect, 19-year-old, Austin York from North Ridgeville, Ohio entered the residence with a shotgun and struck the occupant of the residence with the barrel of the gun causing a superficial injury.
He then discharged a round from the weapon inside of the residence and took the dog before he left.
York was found later that night and detained. He has been charged with aggravated burglary and was transported to the Lorain County jail to await his appearance at the Avon Lake Municipal Court.
The City of Avon police said the dog is now with a responsible adult while custody is determined.
