Homes across Amherst are shining blue lights at night in support of an officer who was severely injured in the line of duty.

Amherst patrolman JR Ptacek is in serious condition at MetroHealth. He has had multiple surgeries for a gunshot wound that caused significant damage, according to a Facebook post on the Amherst, Ohio Public Forum Facebook page.

To show support during Ptacek's long recovery, Amherst residents are replacing their porch and garage lights with blue light bulbs. Those who want to do the same are encouraged to post pictures to the Amherst, Ohio Public Forum Facebook page.

Ptacek is not expected to be out of the hospital anytime soon.
