A man who didn't want to see his wife placed in a nursing home shot her and then turned the gun on himself, according to an Avon police report.

On Thursday around 5 a.m., Avon police received a report of a man living in the 2200 block of Langford Lane who called his daughter to tell her he had shot her mother and was going to commit suicide.

Police responded to the residence where the man lived and set up a perimeter with help from Avon Lake police.

Since police could not make contact with anyone inside the home, nearby neighbors were evacuated from their residences while police waited for Lorain County SWAT to show up.

After the SWAT team arrived, police entered the home and found a man, 77, and woman, 73, laying in bed together with apparent gunshot wounds. A gun was still in the man's hand.

The man's daughter told police her mother had been ill and was going to be placed in a nursing home this week. Her father was depressed over his wife's condition.

Police said the man nor his wife had a history of violence.

The investigation is still ongoing.
