VERMILION, Ohio — Vehicle break-ins are on the rise in Vermilion and police are issuing a warning to residents.

Police gave the following advice for residents:

  • Lock your vehicles and homes
  • Use outdoor lighting as a deterrent
  • Don't leave valuables in your vehicles
  • Report all vehicle break-ins to police so they can be tracked
  • If you see something suspicious, call police immediately

The City of Vermilion Police Department issued the warning on their Facebook page after a reported break-in on Friday night.

Police said the burglar tried to open the doors of several vehicles, but only stole from vehicles that were unlocked.

The burglar didn’t break a window, which would be loud and could set off alarms. The burglar did not use any device to open the cars, which would take time, police said.

The Vermilion Police Department said that these break-ins are crimes of opportunity and if there is no opportunity, there is a high chance that there will be no crime.
