Teen in Ravenna dies after calling police to say he shot himself

RAVENNA, Ohio — The Ravenna Police Department is investigating after a 17-year-old boy called authorities and reported that he had shot himself in the chest.

According to police, the shooting happened around 12:44 a.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Woodgate Boulevard.

The teenager was given first aid instructions until authorities arrived. He was then treated on scene by EMS and taken to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries, police said.

According to authorities, a preliminary investigation indicates there may have been another person at the scene when the shooting occurred, but that person left before police arrived.

Officers found a handgun at the scene.

The case is being investigated by the Ravenna Police Department, Portage County Sheriff's Office, Portage County Coroner's Office, Portage County Prosecutor's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
