ROOTSTOWN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Portage County sheriff’s deputy who was set on fire by a man during an attempt to serve felony warrants is recovering and in good spirits, according to sheriff deputy Dave Doak.

Sergeant Jim Acklin is making some progress after Jay Edward Brannon, 45, threw a container of flammable liquid on him, then ignited the liquid.

Sheriff Doak posted the update on his Facebook page after he made a visit to Sergeant Acklin in the hospital.

“If you don’t know Jim, he is a very humble guy and doesn’t care for the limelight,” Doak said. “He expressed to me he and his family want to thank everyone for the texts, phone calls, social media posts and especially your prayers and well wishes.”

Sergeant Acklin suffered second and third-degree burns on his hands, arms and legs, according to Sheriff Doak.

Brannon has been charged with attempted aggravated murder and aggravated arson.

Sheriff Doak said he believes the support Sergeant Acklin is receiving will have a positive impact on his recovery.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Sergeant Acklin.
