LAKE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A 61-year-old man died Monday night when his car collided with a dump truck that was waiting to make a turn into a driveway in Lake Township.
The driver has been identified as Billy Ervin, 61, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday on Cleveland Avenue NW just north of Lake Center Street.
The 2005 Kenworth W900 dump truck was stopped in the left lane waiting on traffic to pass so it could turn into a driveway. The truck was rear-ended by Ervin, who was driving a Hyundai Sonata, according to troopers. Both vehicles were in the northbound lane when the crash occurred.
The Hyundai was heavily damaged in the crash, authorities said. The truck sustained minor damage.
Authorities said the car’s airbag was deployed in the crash. Ervin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Stark County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the dump truck was not injured in the crash.
The road was shut down for several hours while troopers worked the scene.
Alcohol isn’t thought to have contributed to the crash. The cause of incident remains under investigation.
