OSNABURG TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A historic church in Stark County built nearly 150 years ago was destroyed Wednesday in a fire.

Crews responded to the 5400 block of Hein Avenue SE in Canton for a fire at the Wildwood Chapel.

According to the Osnaburg Township Fire Department, the church was built in 1870 and had a "thriving" congregation.

When firefighters arrived at the church, the building's roof had already collapsed and flames and smoke billowed from the razed structure.

"This is certainly a sad loss of a piece of history. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the church family," Osnaburg firefighters said in a Facebook post.
