Reaching capacity is a concern many animal shelters face but for the Stark County Dog Warden, it's a problem that continues to threaten the lives of some furry faces, most recently last week.
"Our issue of capacity started three years ago when we started a veterinary medical program because we hold the dogs for a longer period of time to get them healthy. Because of changes in the law, we hold dogs, no breed specific, in the shelters," said Jon Barber, dog warden for Stark County.
By state law, the pound has to take all stray dogs in and hold them for 72 hours before euthanizing them but Barber said they hold animals for as long as 30 days while they are properly treated for by vet technicians.
He said there is an influx of dog breeds coming in that he describes as "bullying types" based on their behavior and the public's perception of some breeds.
The Stark County Dog Warden has 29 kennels for larger dogs and 40 smaller dogs kennels that are typically at or reaching capacity, according to the Barber.
"Fortunately, we haven't had to euthanize any dogs lately. Just this week, we had two rescue groups come by and rescue six dogs," Barber said.
The aftermath of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey left many pets separated from their owners, causing overflow into shelters and eventually sending animals to local shelters throughout Northeast Ohio.
Barber said the shelter wasn't affected by the hurricane aftermath because most of their rescues are local ones. They continue to work with shelters like The Stark County Humane Society to reduce capacity.
"We seem to notice an influx through the holidays with people just dumping their dogs when they leave town but it's hard to judge when we get the most influx of dogs into the shelter."
There's an adoption fee, ranging from $150 to $99 for anyone who wants to adopt, which covers vaccinations, any neutering or spading that is needed and heartwarming treatment.
