Woman charged for scam involving child's death

Alliance police say a woman has been charged after she scammed residents of several cities out of money while masquerading as the grandmother of a slain Canton toddler who died earlier this month.

Police said Lisa Dalesandro, 51, had been running the scam for some time, pretending to be the relative of 3-year-old Hailey Miku.

The toddler was killed on March 4 and her father, 22-year-old Mathew Miku, has been charged in her death.

Authorities said they were notified about Dalesandro after the child’s aunt, Tammy Mackey, did some detective work of her own and confronted the woman.

Dalesandro had been running the scam in Massillon, Canton and Alliance, asking people for money so she could buy a headstone and bury her alleged granddaughter.

Police said Mackey filmed the confrontation with her cell phone and then offered to go into a nearby store and get cash from an ATM to donate. Instead, Mackey called police and Dalesandro was arrested soon after.
