Body of missing 18-year-old swimmer found at Portage Lakes

The body of an 18-year-old swimmer whodisappeared into the water of Portage Lakes Wednesday has been found.

At 9:45 a.m. Friday, crews pulled the teen's body from the water, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. 

The Coventry Township Fire Department, along with members of the Summit County Water Rescue Team, the Ohio Division of Natural Resources, and the Summit County Sheriff's Office had been searching Portage Lakes for the swimmer since getting a call about the disappearance on Wednesday at 2:23 p.m.

An 18-year-old woman told authorities that she and her boyfriend had been swimming off a boat near the Akron Yacht Club around 2:20 p.m. when the boat began to drift away. Her boyfriend was unable to swim back to the boat.

The woman said she attempted to rescue him but was unable to locate him after he went fully under the water.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office has not yet confirmed that the body found is that of the missing swimmer. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office has been notified and is in the process of identifying the body.
