Man fatally thrown from vehicle in late night Copley Township crash

Posted

A man was killed when he was ejected from the drivers seat of a vehicle after it slammed into a utility pole in Copley Township early Saturday morning, police say.

Highway Patrol officials are investigating the crash that killed Darrelle Fischer, a 32-year-old man from Akron, and hospitalized Shaquilla Thomas Fischer, a 22-year-old Akron woman. Authorities suspect the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.

Fischer was driving a Pontiac Montana on South Cleveland-Massillon Road when police say the vehicle veered off the road, smacking the utility pole. Police say Fischer was thrown from the vehicle by the impact, and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Thomas, the passenger in the car, sustained injuries in the crash. Police say she was only wearing a lap belt during the accident. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
