Construction of the NEXUS pipeline is being blamed for a mishap that caused part of a road in Green to cave in Monday night.

According to the city's engineer Paul Pickett, NEXUS crews were using a boring machine to tunnel under Arlington Road between Nimisilla and Killinger Roads.

As dirt was being removed, a section of the road collapsed about one foot, making it unsafe for drivers.

A steel plate was placed over the road and it was closed to traffic. It will remain closed until Friday.

Pickett said NEXUS will continue tunneling under the road and then pay a contractor to fix the surface.

"Construction always comes with some inconvenience and sometimes surprises, so I would say that's par for the course. Nothing to be concerned about there. They reacted quickly. The city reacted quickly. Everything is being handled in a safe manner," Pickett said.

But Michelle Herdlick, who lives near the construction site, is concerned about what happened.

"I find it very disheartening," she said. "Now we have a problem that just kind of gnaws in the back of your mind that what's going to be the next problem?" Herdlick said.

Green fought the NEXUS pipeline project for a long time, but several months ago the city settled and received $7.5 million.

The pipeline work in Green is expected to be finished in September.
