Summit County Executive Russ Pry died Sunday following a series of complications following his colon cancer surgery in June. Pry was 58 years old.
Although he was set to return to work on Monday, Pry's office released a statement Friday that said he wouldn't be running for re-election in November for a third term because of health concerns, per Ohio.com
Pry had served in the post since 2007. The press release following his death written by his chief of staff Jason Dodson, said that Pry was "a leader that came along at the right time, and will be sorely missed by this community."
The Summit County Democratic Party announced on Tuesday that the replacement for Pry as the party's candidate in November will be determined at a meeting on August 11 at 7:00 p.m. at North High School in Akron.
A memorial service for Pry is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 13 at 10:00 a.m. at the John S. Knight Center with a celebration of life to follow at Tangiers on West Market Street in Akron from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Russ' name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Visiting Nurse Service.
