MENTOR, Ohio — Choosing to adopt a pet from a local shelter or rescue can save the lives of animals, but for one man, adopting a pet from the Lake Humane Society actually saved his life.

A man named Alan adopted a cat named Bear from the Lake Humane Society in December 2018, according to the shelter.

Last week, Alan, who lives alone, was not feeling well and took a nap to try and feel better. Bear, sensing something was wrong, jumped on Alan’s chest, nudged him with her paws and licked his face until he woke up, the shelter said.

Upon awaking, Alan was dizzy and couldn’t see clearly so he called 911 and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Alan’s blood sugar was recorded at over 900.

When blood sugar reaches over 600, the body’s blood starts thickening and begins drawing fluids from the rest of the body, causing diabetic coma, brain damage and even death, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Alan’s doctor told him that if Bear hadn’t woken him up, he likely would have died in his sleep, the shelter said.

Lake Humane Society said Alan is back at home feeling better and spending quality time with his hero, Bear.
