MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — UPDATE: The man has been found safe, according to the Mansfield Police Department.
Mansfield police were looking for a missing 29-year-old man who was thought to be in distress.
The man was reported missing Friday morning by his wife, police said.
He had been in a “distraught state of mind” according to his wife and left their home sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning, according to police.
His vehicle was located at a family member’s home on the south side of Mount Vernon, but he was nowhere to be found.
Upon further investigation, Mount Vernon officers discovered that a loaded handgun was missing.
Police believed the man may have left the area on foot but said it’s possible that someone picked him up.
Authorities said they were concerned about the man's safety and that he may have been armed.
