Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and local law enforcement agencies all around Northeast Ohio are participating in the event.
During last year's event in October, around 912,305 pounds of unused drugs were collected nationwide. Out of the 4,274 agencies that participated, Ohio had 195 police departments involved.
According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more than six million Americans abused prescription drugs. The study shows that most of the medications were obtained by family and friends.
The goal of the program is to help prevent drug overdose deaths and addiction.
