Shop with a Cop scam nabs thousands

A big warning is coming out of Summit County about a charity scam that took thousands from people all over the county.

The criminals worked this scam over the phone and in person.

The sheriff's office got a tip about 10 days ago about people being called concerning donations for the Shop with a Cop program.

And once the person said yes, the caller told them a deputy would be out to their home to collect the money.

The callers in the scam said the sheriff's office was working with the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club. However, the sheriff's office said it is not affiliated with that club, and it's not soliciting donations for the Shop with a Cop program.

A total of 40 residents and local businesses donated to this fake effort at anywhere from $50-$200 a pop.

One person has been identified, and others could be facing charges of impersonating a peace officer and fraud.

If you have been contacted, call the summit county sheriff's office at 330-643-2131.
