United States Astronaut and Senator John Glenn has been hospitalized in Columbus, Ohio.

According to the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, Senator Glenn was admitted more than a week ago to The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University.

Glenn was selected by NASA in 1959 to be a part of the 'Mercury Seven,' a select group of men that flew on the Mercury spacecraft. Later in 1962 he became the first man to orbit the Earth.

After leaving NASA, he became a senator for Ohio and served in office for 25 years. He now works with students at The Ohio State University.

The college said that although Glenn is at the hospital, it does not necessarily mean he has cancer.

Senator Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman both issued statements about Glenn on Wednesday:

“Connie and I ask Ohioans to join us in sending our love to John and Annie Glenn and their children and to respect their family’s privacy at this difficult time.”
