U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) stated on Mother's Day Sunday that he wanted to pay tribute to Ohio moms he has encountered who are struggling with addiction.
Many of the women he has met were inspired to turn the corner specifically because they wanted to be better mothers, according to Portman, who added that they have overcome great obstacles for their children's sakes.
After meeting with participants in recovery programs in Marion, Columbus and Athens, Portman said he saw women who were working hard to get back on their feet and provide an example for their children.
He pointed to the U.S. Senate's passage on March 10 of the comprehensive addiction and recovery act that Portman and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) sponsored to help women get access to treatment and recovery services.
